Carrying off of my note in the most recent Supernatural review (tinyurl.com/spnS4), have you ever come across a group of fans that seem to absolutely hate whatever it is they claim to be a fan of?
This happens to pretty much every thing that has more than one of... whatever it is it may be (television episodes, movies, books whatever else you can think of) and I just can't figure out why.
The biggest example I have of this is SPN. There are some "fans" out there that, frankly, make it so the rest of us are embarrassed to admit we are fans. Every week they have something new to complain about. For a long while it was the so was very misogynistic because Dean hit women. Which... I suppose you could kind of argue except for the fact that the majority of the women he hit were possessed by demons and/or trying to kill him (or Sam, you know how protective Dean gets).
But of course, once the sane fans caught on to this craziness and pointed out how incredibly stupid that complaint was, they switched gears from 'Dean hates women' to 'the show is racist.' The reason why? Sam and Dean keep killing demons. THE SHOW IS RACIST AGAINST DEMONS!!! Seriously...? How dare those two kill the people trying to kill them.
Naturally, the sane fans caught wind of this as well, and the crazies had to change their tune again. This time the show was still racist, but not against demons. No, instead it was black people. Another arguable point if it weren't for the fact that I could list off multiple black characters, some good and some 'evil' (Gordon, Hendricks, Missouri - the psychic chick in season one - everyone in "Route 666," that hunting couple whose names I can't remember and black Ruby - who was made of win). But, they decided it was racist because a particular one time character wasn]t black. Which... I can't believe anyone could get hung up on that unless the character was supposed to be like Martin Luther King Jr. and they cast a white guy. But he was just some random dude and they were pissed off because he wasn't black. Of course, they would've been pissed off anyway if he was black because he got killed by the end of it (and he was sort of a jerk...). Talk about double standards.
Supernatural isn't the only thing with these problems though. The Star Wars franchise gets a lot of flack for this, that and the other thing (really people, the prequels aren't that bad. I've seen far far faaaaaar worse) and now that the Star Trek movie is coming out it's feeling a similar sting (as I'm sure it's felt in the past as well). So, what do you think? Should these people even bother considering themselves fans? Also, got any good stories to share with the rest of the class?
