Anyone got any thoughts on Ringu? I've got to admit, it left me somewhat baffled as to what the fuss about. People told me it was terrifying but I couldn't even spot which bits were meant to be scary - apart from the bit at the end which seemed more silly to me than frightening. Maybe I've seen too many horror films or something.

I think it was different in that the horror was anticipated and suggested rather than 'in your face'. I kind of liked it because I am not a fan of visual horror. I think horror movies have gotten way too graphic, but to each his own I guess. Welcome to the board btw, it has been rather dead around here lately. I think everyone must be frozen ~Abs

Dead where? The forum area? No way... I enjoyed Ringu. I can see though that if you had seen the American remakes and the plethora of American remakes of Asian films, then you might not have been scared by it. Did you see the Asian one first? Some people find a subtitled movie to be detrimental to the story itself and refuse to watch them for that reason alone. I find that Asian horror films bring a level of creepiness to the screen that American films do not. American films tend to have two primary aspects. Nudity and gore. Hostel was all the rage when it came out and you can descibe that movie entirely with those three words. Nudity and gore. All said, I have 6 Ring films. 2 American, 3 Japanese and 1 Korean. I have the books as well, but the trilogy of stories does not follow the movie trilogy. There was a film called Spiral that was the sequel to the Ring. Asian films tend to cross a boundary that American ones often shy away from. Children. I will never forget the first time I saw the clip from the Grudge of the girl lifting up the covers in bed and discovering Toshi lying on her staring at her. Still gives me chills. And I have 6 "Grudge" movies (well, Ju-on movies to be more precise.) Bloody MonkeyZ

I honestly tried to watch Ringu a while back. I could not help but find myself being utterly bored with the movie. While I do enjoy my Asian horror (I own Ju-on, Gozo, Audition, and the guinea pig series) for there slow pace and dark atmosphere, Ringu was just too slow in my opinion.
