The box cover has tentacles holding an assortment of cards. And it says “The Call Of Cthulhu Word Game.” With a $20 price tag I was quite interested in this game. So many genre games these days have prices that start around $35 and up.How could I pass this up? Simple, I couldn't.
The concept of this game is simple. Scrabble using cards (and did I mention Cthulhu?) And I love me a good game of Scrabble (and be honest, who doesn't?) The game starts with each player getting 7 letter cards (see, I told you it was Scrabblesque.) They also get 5 Cthulhu pawns (wouldn’t Scrabble be much cooler if there were Cthulhu elements to it?) Every letter has a point value (just like in Scrabble, but different.) The point value is based on the number of hard interior angles in the letter (Just think about that for a second. . . Ok, continue.) So an A is worth 5 points (because inside the letter there are 5 hard angles) while an O is worth zero points (as Willy Wonka said "You get nothing! You lose! Good day, sir!") The goal is to reach 100 points without losing your pawns (because without any pawns you have apparently gone crazy, ever seen how emotionally charged chess matches get when someone loses a pawn?). In this game, you lose a pawn by failing to roll your word point total or higher on a 20 sided die.
I played the game for about an hour and have to say that it plays quick and fun. I did find myself needing to swap out all my letters several times. This was odd for me because when I play Scrabble, I will not swap out tiles no matter what I have. Made me feel weird not being able to make a word, but with I, I, I, I, U, Q, X . Tell me what word you would make with those letters (and I don't count the crappy cheaty Scrabble words like XI and QI. I hate those words.)
If you like word games I highly recommend this one. 5 stars. Check out the website
