5 Stars
A mother murders her eldest daughter. A clock appears in the middle of a park. A one-eyed man with a raven on his shoulder joins three homeless men on a chilly night.
Embrace the night and all its terrors in this macabre gallery of monsters. The living and the dead, the spectral and the material—horrifying visions from the tormented mind of Chantal Noordeloos. Your nightmares will never be the same. Deeply Twisted is a collection of 20 horror flavored stories.
I really enjoyed the 20 Deeply Twisted Tales by Chantal Noordeloos, below is a comment on each one. There is no theme except horror and terror and there is no lack of it in any one story. Her story telling is mesmerizing and she covers so many subgenres, science fiction, gothic and torture porn. Her writing flows well, the stories are edited well and I was never bored. This is quick fix horror at its very best. I was totally fascinated how Chantal could grab you in the first sentence or two and keep you locked in until the very end of the story.
In the first Deeply Twisted tale, Soulman, three homeless men face their sins and their destiny guided by the mysterious soulman. The depth of human depravity is examined by the reader as each man sings his song to the Soulman’s raven. This is a terrifying story that dwells on the outskirts of humanity. It will chill you to the bone and make you hope against hope that there is no such thing as Soulman.
The Widow is a tale of ghostly terror in which a witch, wicked children and a dysfunctional family from hell are thrown together to put the reader in the land of creepiness. Set in the Netherlands probably around the turn of the century a young girl feels distanced from her siblings and father, but feels a closeness to her mother and grandmother. The bog behind her family’s home is haunted by a widow who is supposedly a witch. Young girls are disappearing, and a secret is soon to be discovered which will change their lives forever. The Widow is one of my favorite of the Deeply Twisted Tales, a truly haunting tale with a surprise ending.
A Taste of Darkness is short and horrifying. Before warned before reading it, it is hard to believe so much horror can be delivered in less than two pages.
When the Bell Tolls takes a normal family of three and dumps them into a pit of terror when a huge clock tower appears in the park they are visiting. A hint of scifi with horror overtones, this tale puts War of the Worlds to shame. My heart was racing til the very end.
Death Awaits You gives merit to the old adage, Judge not lest ye be Judged. This judge follows the law rather than her gut. The
consequences are dire. I really liked this one too. There is not a lot of horror from a woman’s perspective. Chantal Noordeloos
brings us feminine horror without the frills.
Uncle Edmond’s Funeral will have you laughing in fear. A bit of darkness imbued with humor. Who hasn’t imagined such goings on at a funeral?
The New Breed propels the reader through the zombie apocalypse and into humanitiy’s future. An original perspective and if you think too hard about it, very possible. Scary as hell.
The Little Death is a parent’s worse nightmare, true to life horror, the absolutely most frightening tale that will leave you with a two ton weight on your heart.
In The Dispensation of Jack Harrington, Jack who is a serial killer attends a serial killer convention of sorts. Moral of the story, never trust a serial killer. This one is light on gore and heavy on character play. Twisted, yes. Scary, No. I wish it had been longer or that Chantal had elaborated a bit more, there are such possibilities I imagined.
Deeply Twisted, the titular tale is one of paranoia, superstitions, witches and mob madness, it is the Salem your mother never told you about. I really liked this one, maybe I am deeply twisted too.
The Angel’s Grave shows us there is no redemption for fortune hunting in a graveyard. It is a delightfully wicked gothic story.
Dinner Date is the dinner party from hell, literally. It starts out so innocently, but ends up…..I wouldn’t want to spoil the story for you, but let’s say some guests are not always who they seem to be.
When the Heavens Cried Gold looks at greed and the fate of humanity, we should always be careful of what we desire. A story with a profound moral. Thumbs up!
The Door is one of the longer of the Deeply Twisted Tales, and it is a killer. I was enrapt the entire story, pure terror til the very end. This would make an excellent horror/thriller movie. It is written so well, you will think it is actually written by the person who experienced it, the emotions are so powerfully related. I found it to be exceptional. I am left with a sinking feeling after reading it.
Out of the Storm – Just when you think things couldn’t get more frightening, the storm to end all storms comes. Wow, a truly original story with a powerful ending. Another trip down terror lane, directly into a literally killer storm with an appropriate name.
The Message is a little fantasy, a little sci fi and with a horror ending which was totally unpredictable and leaves you with your mouth agape and wanting more.
Jade is a story of greed and the consequences which maybe more dire than you can imagine. This is one of those stories you think WTF!?
Your Familiar Smile starts out like a heart wrenching tv drama, but ends up as horror at its best. You won’t want to miss this one. If you are a mother, you will be totally freaked out, then go check on your own kids. Innocence can be deceiving.
In the Dead of Night shows you that even your own bed is not safe if your child is having night terrors. This one really creeped me out.
The Hungering Depths is the last, but definitely not the least of the Deeply Twisted Tales. Not since Jaws has the ocean spit out such horror.
I rate Deeply Twisted 5 stars, I wouldn’t recommend it for under 16 due to language and violence visuals, but if you are looking for original, thought provoking horror that will keep you awake at night, go get a copy, you won’t be disappointed.Deeply Twisted is available at for Kindle and in Paperback at Amazon!
