5 STARS
Yea though we perish, yea though we die, we’ll all be together in the sweet by and by…
Fifteen-year-old Ricky Genero is writing a journal of the zombie apocalypse. His high school has burned to the ground, his friends are all either dead or shambling corpses roaming the earth in search of human flesh, and his best friend died saving his six-year-old brother Chuck from a zombie horde. When Chuck is bitten and infected with the zombie virus, Ricky must travel among the walking dead in search of a cure.
Robert Kent has given us a fresh and original look at the zombie apocalypse with All Together Now: A Zombie Story. The story is told by Ricky Genero, a 15 year old who is trying to survive with his friend Michelle and his younger brother Chuck while seeking a cure for the dead. The story alternates between real time and his entries into his journal which explains to us how he and the world happened to evolve into the zombie apocalypse. The book is worth a read just to learn the original cause of the apocalypse, it might just scare you!
All Together Now: A Zombie Story is aimed at young adults around the age of 15, but do not let that deter you if you are an older adult, the story does not lack any of the zombie stuff we love. There is plenty of gore, killer action, brain eating and zombie massacre, but the story is told with much more innocence than we are used to. That brings a new perspective and one in which I totally enjoyed. The story is imbued with both light and dark humor, young love and some very emotionally terrifying and heart wrenching scenes. Kent gives us a very visually descriptive look at the zombies too, my stomach turned at several points and yeah, that is a good thing! The cover art by Adam Smith is amazing and I think captures the true essence of the story.
With all the good stuff in this book, Kent also gives us an alternate ending. They are two very diverse endings and I would love to see some discussion about the different endings. I liked the original ending, but wow, the alternate ending really sparked some emotion within me. I think it is my favorite.
I found no faults with this book, it flows well, Is edited well and it is wickedly smart. There are also some very good moral lessons which gives us a very good reason to share this book with the young adults in our lives. It is guaranteed to warp their young minds, and hey, isn’t that how we all started to love the genre? I really cared for Ricky and Michelle, I loved the originality of the story and it was never predictable. In my opinion that deserves 5 stars. Whether you love zombies or not. I think you will really enjoy All Together Now: A Zombie Story!
