[Editorial note: The Subject line wouldn't let me put the full title in.]
It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Zombies! by Michael P. Spradlin and Jeff Weigel
The only thing more fun than Christmas songs is modified Christmas songs that twist the holiday and theme on it's ear. Or in this case remove the ear and chew it for a bit before moving to other tasty bits to chew and nibble on. Don't get me wrong, there are many positive things about nibbling on an ear, but just like Tyson took it too far one night that will forever haunt him, so too did Michael P. Spradlin take it too far.
With 30 songs given the zombie treatment within this slim tome all I can say is sometimes you can go too far. There were about a third of the songs that I really dug. And some of those only partially. the problem is that what starts out as a creative and novel concept quickly devolves into an off tune forced and repetitive set of ideas. I think this book would have been better if it had been open to anything horrific rather than just zombies. A few vampire carols. Some ghostly ones.
There are quite a lot of illustrations throughout as well. The artist, Jeff Weigel, did a great job of keeping the images fun even while using subject matter that most would not consider fun. But those of us who are here know just how much fun zombies are.
Interestingly enough, two of my favorites were "Rudolph the Zombie Reinder" and "Zombie the Snowman." Both of these reworked songs took the fun and lighthearted nature of the originals and used that as a launching point. The others I enjoyed are "Here Comes Zombie Claus", "Deck the Walls with Parts of Wally", "Zombie Claus is Coming to Town", "We Three Spleens" and "Let's Feast on Merry Gentlemen." Beyond those, the remaining songs fell into two categories. Didn't like at all. Or. A few good lines, but some forced parts that brought it down and ruined the lyrics.
There isn't anything else like this around that I have seen. With that in mind, I do recommend it. Although I do so with reservations. Concept gets a 5 star, but execution gets a 2 star. Rounding that out comes to 3.5 stars.
