A tortured soul painter who seems to be barely holding himself together on a daily basis suddenly finds himself the object of a lovely young woman's affection. The majority of this film focuses on the blossoming of that relationship. But we also see that there is a darkness underlying his quiet introspective personality. As the film progresses we learn the nature of that darkness.
I don't want to reveal the twists and turns in this movie. There aren't a tremendous amount of them, but they are worth the revelation. The ending of this I found hair raising. A chilling and moving ending to a riveting film.
All of you will recognize Joel David Moore from his role in Avatar or even Bones. And some will even hearken back to his everyman survivor hero role in Hatchet (well, almost survivor role.) But if you really want to see this man act you need to see Spiral. And I will let you in on a little secret. Not only does he act his ass off here, he co-wrote the script as well. Apparently he got bored with just that, so he co-directed on top of that. And all I could find myself saying as I watched the credits role by was that I wished he would make more. Well turns out he has. But more on THAT when I track them down.
I caught this movie one night on cable, but have since bought it so I can watch it repeatedly and show to other people as well (just have to get the person I loaned it to to watch it. Hint hint, ZuZu.) I will admit that when I saw the name I originally thought it was a Japanese horror movie. The Japanese one is quite interesting as well, but I am glad for the mistakenly watched movie.
This was originally rated at 5 stars, but the more I think about it, it deserves to get a gold star. And I rank this one high on my list. I have always enjoyed movies that have the added elements. The twists. The moments where you have to be paying attention to get the full effect. This is one of those movies.
