Negan can read people. It rightfully alarms Negan when Rick vows that at some point, he will kill him. Rick's gaze oozes revenge and hate. At this point, we do not know who has been murdered. We are made to suffer a little while longer so that we don’t have our instant gratification.
Negan decides to test Rick’s resolve by taking him on a road trip. Negan is totally incredulous about Rick’s threat after what just happened. He even gives Rick an opportunity to show surrender by leaving Rick’s axe within reach so he can see if he is fast enough to bash Negan in the back of the head. Rick goes for the ax because he has always faced everything that has been thrown his way never backing down. Negan takes Rick’s axe and throws it outside of the RV and tells Rick to fetch it. Rick is thrown out there and is met by hordes of walkers. If that isn’t bad enough, memories of his group are haunting him.
Rick climbs on top of the RV and lays there. We flash back to the scene when the person to pay for Rick’s crimes against Negan meets their fate. Everyone is sitting with their heads down, cowering except Abraham. I had a feeling it would be him. He was by far the strongest and most formidable looking person in their group. It still killed me to watch that scene. Abraham signals Sasha and gets out one last pun, “Suck my nuts.” Those are the last words we hear from our ginger commando. What is very disconcerting is how Negan bashes his head and continues to bash it after he is dead. He could have simply killed him. But, he wanted all of them to bear witness that he is a brutal man; someone capable of doling out corporal punishment when needed.
After being made to watch Rosita stare at Abraham’s gore on Lucille, Darryl loses it and punches Negan. Negan previously warned the group. He said one freak out was free and the next one would have a price. We expect to see Darryl’s head smashed in. Negan wants them to know him in order to realize what they are up against. With no warning, he starts bashing Glen’s head in. Glen’s death was absolutely devastating. He was there since the beginning. He is a father-to-be. His wife is watching this. Negan shows a little emotion by seeing how the whole group is taking this. But, he will not make an exception. As I said, it is so hard to come up with an opinion of Negan. One minute he seems like a rational person but then you see him smiling as he is bashing someone’s head in. It has me very conflicted. Glenn’s last words are to Maggie telling her he will find her.
Negan assists Rick in returning the axe. Rick still has hatred and revenge in his eyes. This little road trip has not resolved anything in regards to Rick’s determination. Negan keeps talking to Rick about his options. He wants him to know that he understands that being in charge is a hard role to give up.
Once they arrive back he throws Rick back into the line. Negan still doesn’t feel that Rick has the fear necessary in order to be in this new found relationship. Negan calls Carl out and ties a belt around his arm then draws a line. Carl is very brave in this situation. Does he cry? No. Let me tell you, if he did, how could anyone judge him for it? He is a kid that knows something bad is about to happen to him. Rick is then asked to cut Carl’s arm off. Rick is frantic. If Rick doesn’t do this, everyone else will be killed. He doesn’t know what to do. Michonne tells him that they all understand if he doesn’t do it. He wants to cut his own arm off. Negan won’t stand for it. He wants to know that Rick will do what he says no matter what it is. What better way to break a man than by making him chose between taking an axe to his son’s arm and a group of people being slaughtered. This is the moment that he understands what he is up against. Carl tells him to do it. Carl understands that this isn’t what his father wants to do and actually cares about everyone else. Negan stops him and states that, “You answer to me. You provide for me. You belong to me.” For the first time Negan and the audience understand that Rick is broken.
Negan gives another one of his talks letting everyone know that things are going to be different and they end up taking Darryl with them. Simon is good with the names. He should be the town cryer! Darryl is now used as a tool to keep the group in line. If they don’t follow the rules, Darryl will pay the price.
Negan and his posse leave. We are left with a group that has lost two of its own. Maggie is the first to get up. She staggers to Glen. Maggie wants to fight. Rick is broken and tries to talk reason to her. The guilt she feels because they came out for her is overwhelming. They all made a choice, but I understand her feeling. Sasha volunteers to help her. That is no surprise since she lost someone she was supposed to have a future with. Rosita, Sasha and Eugene pick up Abraham’s body and load it into the truck. The others help Maggie with Glenn. We then see a scene of the entire group having a meal together. The ones that have died and are absent are there. We see Glenn and Maggie’s son. We also see a pregnant Sasha.
It is now very clear that things are going to be drastically different.
