What can I say? When Abraham first showed up in The Walking Dead, I was not a fan. I was sick of new characters taking the focus off of the regulars. So, I just stared at this man with his mutton chops and handlebar ‘stache and tuned him out. I remember when I really took notice of him which was after Eugene confessed he lied about being the person to cure the sickness that enveloped the world. This man is a top notch actor. This man has acting range that goes beyond his beloved role of Abraham.
While The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones were on hiatus, I had to find a show to kill the time. I stumbled upon Southland. I tend to like gritty cop dramas. So, I started binge watching this show. There was an actor that I could not place. It took me a few episodes to figure out it was Michael Cudlitz without the big, red hair, chops and trademark ‘stache. He played a cop addicted to painkillers who was hiding the fact that he was a homosexual. Going from Abraham with his quirky humor to this serious role told me this is a man to watch. Some might not realize that. I would have to say that I was completely blown away by Cudlitz in one of the last episodes of Southland. He and his partner were abducted by meth heads. It was a situation where you had no idea what was going to happen. In the land of happy endings, I was hoping they both made it out and arrested the criminals. That didn’t happen. Officer John Cooper and his partner were handcuffed dressed in their undershirts and boxers. His partner started praying when he was shot in the head. That scene was brutal. Officer Cooper was then required to drag his partner outside and dig a hole so they could both be buried in it. He ultimately survived. I just remember feeling like I had suffered a loss along with Michael. That is when you know someone has crafted their art.
Abraham had to die in The Walking Dead. He would never have put up with the likes of Negan. He wouldn’t have been Abraham if he did. I am just saddened that we didn’t see Sasha and his relationship develop a little more before we lost him.
So, I am definitely a fan of Michael Cudlitz and plan to watch everything he has had a role in no matter how minor. On IMDB it states he has had 104 roles. That’s a lot of catching up to do!
