Last year Jeff Lindsey threw his hat into the comic writing universe by adapting the first Dexter novel for Marvel. The second foray for Dexter in the four color two dimensional world of comics takes our anti-hero down under to Australia. I was a little confused at the start of this because I had thought this particular story was set in the tv series world of Dexter and followed the series finale. But this 5 part story is firmly set in the world of the novels. As a Dexter fan, this doesn't bother me in the least. Our story follows Dexter as he is "loaned" to Australia for a case they believe he can help with his particular skills. His partner in Australia is Shawna, who is rather similar to his sister Deb. It takes him a little bit to become acclimated to how things work down under. The murders he is helping with are of illegal Asian immigrants. While their is no shortage of suspects, there is one that makes Dexter nervous. In this environment though, he doesn't have the luxury to take matters into his own hands, so he finds himself having to just play it straight. His partner though has other plans. As does the villain of the story. It is always thrilling to get a fix of Dexter, and this tale satisfies that thrill. In the comics, Dexter is certainly not Michael C. Hall. The previous series he reminded me of Gaspard Uliel (the actor who played young Hannibal in Hannibal Rising) but this time around he reminds me of X-Files era David Duchovny. The story taken on its own would be a solid 4 star story, but because it is Dexter, it gives it enough push to be 5 star worthy.
