To this day, filmmakers continue to create 80's style slasher movies. More often than not, they fail miserably, in my eyes. The problem is that they try and make a movie like the kind made in the 80's even though modern storytelling has progressed well beyond that. Cold Prey manages to break out of the 80's style slasher mentality.
The movie stars with a group of 5 friends (as do 95% of all horror movies) Jannicke, Eirik, Morten, Mikal and Ingunn. Jannicke and Eirik are a couple as are Mikal and Ingunn. Morten is the third wheel to Jannicke and Eirik. These 5 are off for a weekend of snowboarding fun in the mountains (because snowboarding in the plains is much less fun.) After what is probably a few hours of fun, Morten takes a tumble and breaks his leg. They are, literally, mountains away from the car, but they find an old abandoned ski lodge. Figuring it will work as shelter for the night and then Eirik will head out for help first thing in the morning.
But complications arise. In the form of the Geir Olav (although we don't know his name at the time, he is just a massive slab of man covered head to toe in mountain gear.) Oh yeah, he is also a methodical homicidal maniac.
As with all movies of this style, gradually the killer whittles down the cast and then events zoom towards the finish line. What sets this movie apart from those others those is the quality and substance of the story. This doesn't feel like a horror movie with a cast of cannon fodder waiting to die. This is a movie about 5 friends who are very solid characters and they stumble into a deadly situation. There is also a tremendous amount of mood and atmosphere put into the story.
This film had me engrossed from start to finish. It is subtitled (being Norwegian and all) and I know that many people will avoid it because of that, but they are missing out on a really good movie.
I sought this out because I was sent Cold Prey 2 to review and it picks up directly from where Cold Prey leaves off. I figured I had to see part one to get the whole story. And I am glad I did. It is now on my "to buy" list. I have no qualms at all with giving this movie high marks. 4.5 stars.
