When I sat down to write the review for The Conjuring, all I could think about were all the spoileriffic things I wanted to talk about but couldn't do in a review.
The first thing I wanted to talk about was the makeup design for the evil witch entity. The first time that we see her really well in the movie she is on top of the hutch in the older daughter's room and as she is glaring down from her perch I had one thought in mind. She looked like Regan in the Exorcist. I don't mean this in a bad way. Regan looked creepy (I have a friend who screams at the sight of Regan at any time, and yes, I had a shirt made with Regan on it just to test the theory!) and so does the witch. Part of the back story in the movie is that the witch was part of the Witch Trials and eventually hung herself and cursed the property. This gives a variety of subtly creepy moments throughout the movie. At one point a noose is found in the home. Later in the movie Lorraine crashes through the floor into an area that is under the house and connected to the basement. While down there she sees the floating "hanging" body of the witch. And really it is just her feet that she sees because of the environment she is in. But when the witch realizes she is there, we see just the feet spin in the air and we know that the witch is now looking down on where Lorraine is hiding.
The creepy factor of the witches presence is just one thing that made this movie a well made spooky and creepy film.
Another part of it was that there was more than just the witch. The house was haunted by several entities. Each of these was the spirit of someone who had been affected in such a way by the witch that they had died. Their ghosts were now tied to the property just as the witches was, although they were not entirely mean spirited spirits. But, when your house is haunted, it is hard to count any ghost as being friendly. Casper is just a cartoon ghost after all.
