The latest movie from director James Wan. Best known for having created the Saw franchise, but Wan continues to put out quality film after quality film. And The Conjuring is no different.
The movie focuses on two families really. The Warren family (Ed and Lorraine) who are supernatural debunkers. He is more specifically a demonologist. They investigate all sorts of cases, and some of them are bonafide instances of something evil. Ed has a room in his home full of unholy trinkets. The most notorious item is a doll named Annabelle. The movie actually starts off explaining the story of Annabelle. Remember the old Twilight Zone with Talking Tina? Annabelle is a combination of Talking Tina and Chucky. A really disturbing story that does have ramifications in our main story.
The other family in question is the Perron family. Roger and Caroline and their 5 daughters. They move into a new home and guess what happens? Nothing. It was a really boring movie. No, just kidding. They find a cellar that was walled up and after they "open" it up, things begin to happen. I don't think there needed to be the correlation between finding the cellar and things happening. As we find out later in the movie, the property itself is cursed.. I don't want to go into all the details though, go see the movie.
If you like movies like Poltergeist, you will enjoy this movie. If you like movies that are built on atmosphere and suspense, you will enjoy this movie. If you like your horror to be filled with campy wisecracks, buckets of blood and nubile teens scantily clad, you will not enjoy this movie.
This is the type of horror movie I love. I can't rave enough about this movie. To say it is the best movie I have seen this year is an understatement. As usual though, I hate to spoil a good movie. There are so many things I want to write and talk about, but I don't want to post spoilers. I want you to go and see the movie. Hmmmm, maybe I should start an area just to discuss things in a spoiler laden environment.
I don't know what to say beyond this deserves a GOLD star. I saw it at the earliest showing available in St Louis and would really like to see it again this weekend.
