We live in an era where horror is inundating the small screens (55" still counts as small screen, right?) of our homes. It is amazing and incredible how many horror shows we have to choose from. Honestly, there is more available than most of us can even keep track of. This week I found a British horror show I had heard nothing about called Crazy Head.
The name doesn't do justice to the show. The show follows two young women who have a special ability. They can see demons hiding among regular people. Amy works at a bowling alley and thinks there is something wrong with what she sees. She doesn't fully understand what is going on. Until Raquel enters the picture. Raquel has been fighting against the demons for years, but after finding Amy she believes a cohort has been found. Someone she can fight alongside and push back the demons who are running unchecked in society.
But Raquel has a secret. There is a demon following her that she has a personal connection to. A demon who is willing to step in and fight other demons to protect her. I think she also has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of Autism where the individual speaks whatever comes to mind without thought of how it will affect others. It is used to great effect throughout the first season of the show.
Jake is a co-worker of Amy's at the bowling alley. Like everyone else in the show, he also has a secret. Well not really a secret. He loves Amy and wants to date her something fierce, but she is not really interested in him. She does love calling him to come drive her whenever she is in need, and he always answers the call. Even when it makes no sense at all.
Suzanne is Amy's best friend and roommate. Unfortunately for her, she gets possessed by a demon (this happens pretty quickly, so it isn't really a spoiler. And her story is fun as it plays out.)
Tyler is Raquel's brother (you didn't think everyone in the show was focused on Amy, did you?) From the first moment Amy meets him, she is attracted to him (hmmm, you were right, it is all about Amy.)
I don't want to give away everything that happens in the series, because it is absolutely worth watching. To be honest, I really only touched on the first episode. This is a show you will want to binge watch, and at 6 episodes, it can easily be a fun evening. Imagine if Sam Winchester, Dean Winchester, and Shaun (from Shaun of the Dead) had a love child. That love child is this show. I know what you are thinking, how do two guys from a tv show and one guy from a movie have a child that is a British tv show. I don't know how they did it, but it likely was because of Crowley! And even more important, I am so happy they did whatever it was they did because this show was pure magic.
I give this a Gold star rating because everything about it was fresh, fun, and exciting for me. It was 6 episodes and being a modern show, that was essentially one story arc. I was okay with that because it felt right at 6 episodes. Having suffered through 6 seasons of American Horror Story where they take a 6 episode story arc and stretch it out over 13 episodes, diluting it and making it much worse, a shorter season like this is perfect. I am eagerly awaiting a second season.
