As a fan of the Evil Dead, I was looking forward to this show ever since I heard the rumors of it. I was thrilled to go San Diego Comic Con and get to go through the exhibit that included a recreation of Ash's trailer. It wasn't actually the trailer used in the series though, but still pretty cool. But I am digressing before I even get started, this is about the first episode of the series.
It was pretty cool from the opening moments of the show seeing Bruce Campbell back in the role. Older, but not the slightest bit wiser. He has a wooden hand now. So the peculiar continuity of the Evil Dead world gets a bit more off kilter. This Ash was never sent back to the middle ages, so the Gauntlet hand is not part of his "weaponry." He uses his hand and his unusual charm to woo ladies.
He has a mundane job again only made interesting because of his co-worker Pablo. And Pablo's friend that just started work, Kelly. This unlikely trio are now the only hope our world has. And that is a scary thing. But we know that Ash can always overcome a few Deadites.
Sam Raimi came on board with this project in order to direct the first episode, and you can tell it has his unique signature style. Not a perfect thing though. He has evolved as a storyteller, but it feels like he was trying to go back to the style he had when he created Evil Dead. It was good though. With Bruce Campbell as Ash, it will be really hard to fail.
I don't want to go into too many details of the episode, because you should watch it. Besides, this is the set up episode. Introducing our cast and the basic premise of what they will be dealing with as the series progresses. If you are a fan, you will enjoy it, if you haven't watched the old movies but can enjoy a good romp combining horror and comedy, you should watch it. I know I will be watching it every Saturday from here on out. I give this 4 stars because it isn't perfect, but it is worth checking out.
