Blake, Alyssa, and Mal Douglas have just had an addition to their family: baby Ruthie. They have just moved into a new home, reading to live out a happy, prosperous life. But this is not to be. There is an old spirit in the house who wants to live again to continue its horrible work and will destroy the Douglas family to do so .
Twisted is Michaelbrent Collings’ newest novel and is a good entry into his particular brand of horror. For the most part, Collings’ themes surround the family and the reaction of the family to horrific events, especially when those events befall decent people. This time, the theme focuses on the cycle of abuse. Blake Douglas was abused horribly by his father as a child and he fears the thought that he could end up following in his father’s footsteps. Because of the events in the book, there is a force working inside of him that wants to bring out his worst side. In this way, Collings found an appropriate way to depict the terrible fact that abuse is carried on from to generation, corrupting not only the abuser but the victim as well. This fact becomes all too in clear in Collings’ excellent conclusion, which I will not ruin by giving away any spoilers here. I promise, it will take you by the throat.
The novel has a slow start, but the characters are likeable and will carry you through. It’s easy to feel for them in their struggles, not just with the supernatural but with everyday life. The story spirals out of control in the second half, which makes it hard to put down. Twisted has a strong moral center, but also provides plenty of chills and cringing moments.
You will find Collings’ books on amazon.com. Be sure to check out this one as well as his other works.
