The Last House on the Left 2009 Trailer
I remember seeing the trailer announcing the remake of “The Last House on the Left” ( LHOTL). The best parts of the movie were pieced together in that trailer to a grungy version of “Sweet Child O’ Mine”. I was counting the days until it opened in theaters. It had some big names in it such as Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter and the familiar face of Sara Paxton.
This movie is set up a little different than the first. We learn a few things in the beginning of the movie. Mari is a skilled swimmer. She has recently lost a brother. The infamous house is a vacation house that they are going to visit rather than where they live. It is in a secluded area. Also, we witness Krug escape from custody with a little help from his friends.
Krug was the star of the original LHOTL. David Hess was the epitome of evil. You looked at him and believed he was a rapist and a murderer. In this new one, we are introduced the Krug played by Garret Dillahunt. Garret Dillahunt just didn’t pull it off for me. I had seen the original version and had a certain level of expectation. If a person was not privy to the original, then they would not be biased at all. This movie stood well on its own. It did not stand well as a remake.
Mari asks her parents if she can visit her friend Paige. She takes the family car. They meet Justin (the original, Junior). Justin is shoplifting and Paige catches him. Somehow they end up going back to his hotel room to buy pot. Mari is sitting in the car, which she could have stayed. Paige is taking forever so she goes in and sees them both smoking. Then they all smoke. As they are doing this, Krug, Sadie and Francis walk in. Francis, I guess, is supposed to be Weasel. Nope, he is definitely no Weasel. His character makes no difference to this movie. If he disappeared the movie would have gone on. Anyway, Krug kidnaps the girls and steals Mari’s car. They are driving when Mari decides to do something to get the car off the road. Krug is pissed. I will sum it up. Paige runs and gets murdered. Krug tries to get Justin to rape Mari, since he won’t he does. Then Mari gets up, hits Krug with a rock and runs to the water. She starts swimming but is hit by a bullet. They think she is dead.
No car, they are in the rain, they end up at the last house on the left, which the Collingwood’s inhabit! The Collingwood’s are such nice people because they set the group up in their guest house. Justin realizes this is Mari’s house. He puts her necklace (forget how he got it) around a cup so that Mrs. Collingwood finds it. As Mr. and Mrs. Collingwood are discussing the necklace, there is a noise on the porch and they find Mari out there. Her father sees that she has been shot and raped. They realize immediately that they are housing the people that violated their daughter. They have no phones or car to leave. I guess Mr. Collingwood was prepping for the Fitz role because he gives a really great pep talk to his wife about being prepared to do anything because they realize the position they are in.
We will just summarize the ending, of course, Sadie, Frances die. Justin tries to help the parents and they actually take him with them when they escape. Krug is kept so that he can have his head put in a microwave for his punishment.
The movie was really good. It should have been independent from LHOTL. I realize this review was droll and stupid, but it had to be done. Most remakes are droll and stupid. Fortunately, the next set won’t be!!
