Ok, maybe I understand the ban in Germany and China, but Japan?? The country that gives us Resident Evil? Apparently the banning is due to the gore factor. Anyone else heard anything about this?
EA's upcoming survival horror sci-fi video game Dead Space has just become another game to get the status of 'Banned'. CHUD recently was chatting to Glen Schofield, game's creator, and learned that in Germany, China and Japan the game is banned. From the videos and screenshots, the game is fairly gory and maybe I'm shooting in the dark to say it might have something to do with it.
Good news though...CHUD also learned that the game has been pushed up to October 14! Dead Space is going to be released on Xbox360, Playstation 3 and PC. No word on Wii version.

How can something be so gory as to be banned? Don't they have NC-17/M ratings?

kinda pointless for them to do a Wii version now that it is banned in China and Japan.
And banning it can only help sales of the game.

I'll attempt to rent it when I go home this weekend... so we should have a review rather soon, unless I cannot acquire it.

Damn it! The only one rental place has it at all and it's out the entire week I'm here....

I've seen nothing thus far that is even remotely worthy of being banned. (I'm at least 3/4 done so far). I found Silent Hill 4 far more disturbing.

Great game this one, loved the amounts of gore and the suspense in it. Most of the times you find yourself juggling monsters and ammo trying to aim precisely at the leg joints and stuff to avoid overusing ammo, and the upgrades on the weapons gives it a lot of value for replay. Still, like you said, though it is really gorey and cool while being so, it doesn't display anything that was not done already.
It is indeed graphical... but there are lots of games which do the same even with worst subjective experiences (it will always be better on the downside to evicerate a demon or a zombie rather than a normal person... and well there's a Manhunt on the Wii isn't there?.) I think this has got much to do with comercial strategy issues more than a moral value dilema... though if they are banning it, I don't think it will last much with the upcoming sequel and the plans for a movie.

Most likely not, especially if there's a movie in the works.
