The opening two of this movie is one of the most powerful I have ever seen. The visual imagery is stunning and I would honestly pay just to watch those few minutes over and over on a big screen. The music sets your nerves on edge and gets your adrenaline pumping with an intensity that is unsustainable. That isn't a knock against the movie. No movie could keep up the pace the opening set.
The actual movie takes place at a quiet little police station in Scotland. Rachel is a PC (Police Constable AKA a cop anywhere else) who witnesses a young man, Caesar, hit a man in the street. The body vanishes, but she cuffs Caesar and drags him to the station anyway. Sergeant Macready books him and he is put in a cell across from a teacher who is there after a domestic dispute with his wife. There are two other PC on duty, conveniently out having sex in their squad car, and the Sergeant has them go look for the victim. They find and bring in the man who was hit and a Doctor comes to check him out. Now that the entire cast is in play, things start to heat up. As the doctor examines the injured man, he has a horrifying vision and then tries to kill the man. The Sergeant decides it is best to lock everyone up for the time being, but then the injured man lets on that he knows the Sergeant's secret.
And that is the crux of this movie. All 8 people have dark secrets, and tonight the toll is due for those secrets. I won't get into and spoil any of the secrets, because that is the fun of watching movies. Seeing the story play out for that first time. And the dream of filmmakers is to make a movie that you will want to watch again even after seeing the story play out that first time.
This movie succeeds on all levels for me. So why doesn't it get a 5 star then? Or even a GOLD star? There are some things I can nitpick about the story, it isn't perfect. But I can, without any reservations, say this is absolutely a film you should check out. Very enjoyable.
